Las Vegas Sands takes a stand on World Food Day


On World Food Day, Las Vegas Sands demonstrated its unwavering commitment to food security through a series of impactful initiatives. Across their resorts, the company rescued an impressive five tons of food, which was subsequently donated to hunger relief organizations.

In Singapore, Marina Bay Sands maintained a robust partnership with The Food Bank Singapore (in photo above), contributing over 40,000 kilograms of food through their catering operations, supporting 370 beneficiary organizations. In Macao, Sands China played its part by donating bread and pastry items to the Macau ECOnscious Community Fridge project. Furthermore, Sands introduced the annual Sands Cares Global Food Kit Build, bringing together over 350 Team Members and partners at Marina Bay Sands to assemble 5,200 food kits for The Food Bank Singapore, reinforcing their dedication to addressing food security on a global scale.

Sustainable solutions

Each year on 16 October, the world observes World Food Day, an occasion rooted in the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. This day, now in its 80th year, serves as a vital tool for the United Nations to shed light on the pressing issue of food insecurity and explore sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty. A recent United Nations report from 2022 paints a grim picture: one in ten people worldwide grapples with hunger. An alarming 691-783 million individuals faced food shortages in 2022, marking an increase of 122 million compared to 2019.

Sands approach to food security

To champion corporate responsibility, Sands places a firm focus on alleviating hardship within communities, with food security at the forefront. The company and its resorts have dedicated to address the sustainability issue this through a diverse initiatives and partnerships designed to accelerate impact.

Initiatives in Asia

Las Vegas Sands took the initiative to rescue a staggering five tons of food from their operations for donation to hunger relief organizations. Marina Bay Sands, in particular, has fostered a strong partnership with The Food Bank Singapore, channelling unserved food to those in need. Since 2016, over 40,000 kilograms of food have been donated, reaching 370 beneficiary organizations. In Macao, Sands China initiated a program involving the donation of bread and pastry items to the Macau ECOnscious Community Fridge project, further extending their reach.

Lasting commitment to the community

Last year Sands introduced the annual Sands Cares Global Food Kit Build, underscoring their commitment to food security. This global effort unites Team Members worldwide in their endeavor to address this vital issue within their local communities.

Marina Bay Sands, for instance, organized a food kit build involving over 350 Team Members and partners, resulting in 5,200 food kits assembled for The Food Bank Singapore. These kits comprised essentials such as rice, rolled oats, biscuits, condiments, and instant beverages.

Beyond the food kit build, Marina Bay Sands galvanized its staff and tenants in January, donating 430 cartons of food, ultimately providing 15,581 meals for underprivileged communities in Singapore. Team Members regularly volunteer to sort food donations at The Food Bank Singapore’s warehouse.

In Macao, Sands China embarked on a series of activations to support Caritas Macau through the Sands Cares Global Food Kit Build, delivering 3,000 food kits totaling 21 tons of food to those in need.

Sands China has a decade-long partnership with the Macau Holy House of Mercy to support food relief programs, benefiting thousands of families facing financial difficulties. These efforts underscore Sands’ deep commitment to addressing the basic human need for food and the impactful role they play in the fight against hunger.
