Maryland’s new sports betting bill to host 60 online operators

Maryland state legislature green lights online sports betting bill with a capacity for 60 online operators

On Monday 12 April, Maryland‘s legislature passed an in-person sports wagering and online sports betting bill at a 60 online operator capacity. Betters can expect to place their bets by 1 September, 2021.

Lawmakers have green light up to 60 online operators and 30 retail licences. The annual charge is set at $50,000 for larger operators and $10,000 for smaller operators. Furthermore, the cost of applying for an online sportsbook is $500,000 excluding an additional annual levy of $100,000. The bill also doesn’t require in-person registration for opening online accounts.

While Governor Larry Hogan still needs to seal the deal, it is reported that he is expected to approve. Thereafter, state regulators will draw up the state’s gaming regulation.

According to Action Network, Maryland officials eye 1 September, 2021 as the official launch date for their first online and retail sportsbook – just in time for the massively popular NFL season.

The news is highly promising given the large number of operators which could attract major names in the sector both locally and overseas. Similarly, SiGMA US correspondent discusses the clear indications Maryland and Ohio signaled showing that the gaming industry is on a rebound after the Covid-19 ‘crises.
