Vietnam cracks down on $72 million illegal gambling ring

Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal gambling have gained significant attention with the recent dismantling of a $72 million online gambling network in the southern province of Ben Tre. As announced by the news outlet VN Express, authorities arrested 12 individuals as part of an extensive investigation into illegal gambling activities. This operation underscores the growing sophistication of digital platforms that facilitate illicit betting.

Vietnam’s battle against illegal gambling

Vietnam’s stringent gambling regulations allow only limited legalised forms of betting, such as state lotteries and select casino gambling. However, the underground gambling market remains vibrant, often linked to organised crime. The recent bust serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal gambling activities, with police actively investigating the involvement of an additional 60 individuals in both Ben Tre and Ho Chi Minh City.

According to authorities, the arrested individuals confessed to running a complex network across multiple websites since late 2023. This gambling ring reportedly comprised 30 branches and involved hundreds of accounts, showcasing the extensive nature of the operation. Despite the complications caused by the anonymity that digital platforms provide, Vietnam’s police are utilising cybercrime experts to track these illegal transactions.

The illegal gambling industry has thrived despite strict regulations, primarily driven by the appeal of online platforms that allow users to gamble from home. Recent operations have revealed the use of advanced technology, including fake SIM cards, foreign social media platforms, and fraudulent bank accounts, to facilitate transactions. In this latest case, police seized VND 1.8 billion ($72,000) in cash, along with laptops, tablets, jewellery, and weapons.
